India’s Transport Department has launched an initiative to computerise all of its records at a state and local level to prepare a state register for all vehicles and licences.

The initiative is part of a larger bid by the central government to prepare a national register for vehicles and licences.

Officials of the department said that National Informatics Centre (NIC) is collecting data from various District Transport Offices (DTOs) to upload onto a single network.

Data collected can be broadly divided into two categories. The first relates to details of a vehicle such as its registration number which will be recorded under the subhead ‘Vahan’. The other relates to licences which will be under the subhead ‘Sarathi’, an official explained.

Once uploaded, the data will comprise the district register. All districts will contribute to the state register. The Centre [central government] will then upload all state registers to make a national register.”

The state has received a grant of Rs 17 crore (US$ 3.5million) from the Centre. Once the national register is made, all details pertaining to vehicles and licences will be available nationally. This will enable licence renewal anywhere in the country.
