Intel to scale up efforts for digital literacy in India

In India we will continue to scale our efforts under the National Digital Literacy Mission, said Sandeep Aurora, Director, Marketing, Intel South Asia.

Intel is all set to introduce a new avatar of computing in 2013 with the aim of making technology accessible, affordable and usable. In order to create a digitally literate population in the country Intel and NASSCOM, along with other ecosystem players launched the National Digital Literacy Mission in India.

According to Intel, the National Digital Literacy mission aims to raise the level of urgency for domestic technology adoption and increase the nationwide awareness about the benefits of technology. “Intel conceptualised and launched the National Digital Literacy Mission with the help of some of the stalwarts of the IT ecosystem like Dell, DEF, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, NASSCOM, NASSCOM Foundation and NIIT in August 2012,” said Sandeep Aurora, Director of Marketing, Intel South Asia.

Intel claims to have impacted over one million learners through its ‘Intel Easy Steps Digital Literacy programme’ in India in the year 2012. The global information technology (IT) firm also claims to remain committed to working with the ecosystem and start several initiatives towards fulfilling the government’s vision of having one e-literate person per household by 2020. “We aim to scale up the ‘Intel Easy Steps Digital Literacy programme’ through our partners to reach out to the adults and youth all over India,” Aurora said.

During the Digital Literacy Week held from 10th -15th December 2012, about 500 volunteers from Intel and other members of the National Digital Literacy Mission went out and trained over 15000 learners across 10 cities in India on digital literacy skills.

According to Aurora, Intel being the main driver of the digital literacy mission is striving to align its efforts and resources across the country to create a digitally literate India that understands the value of technology.

This means implementation of the activities as well as identifying and defining frameworks for other partners in the National Mission to scale up the digital literacy drive, Aurora said.

Talking to OneWorld South Asia, about the firm’s rural initiatives in the country, Aurora said that through its ‘Follow the Fibre program’, Intel has started training one member per household in the three villages in India associated with the first three Panchayats where the country’s National Fiber Optic Network has arrived.

“A training centre established in each of these villages along with the help of the Digital Empowerment Foundation would fulfill this commitment and the target is to train one citizen in every household on the benefits of technology within a month’s time,” Aurora said.
