Sharing ideas through mobiles

Mobile phone penetration in many regions across the world is helping farmers significantly in knowledge sharing. WeFarm is the latest project in one such attempt at reaching the farmer community, where on sending an SMS, any query related to crops is answered.

Opportunities for small-scale farmers across the world to share their knowledge with each other are rarely possible. Innovative ideas and solutions could be possible if farmers talked to each other directly and shared their experiences to get knowledge they need to improve their lives, even if it is across large distances and different languages.

Reliable internet access is still a challenge in many countries. However, mobile telephony penetration has been significant in many regions, and small-scale farmers are using it for their daily work.  It is in this context that WeFarm has been created, a project created by Cafédirect Producers’ Foundation (CPF), an NGO attempting to reduce poverty, tackle climate change and improve livelihoods of smallholder cocoa, coffee and tea farmers across Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Farmers, members of the WeFarm project can send an SMS to the system and ask any questions about their crops. The question will be shared with all the WeFarm community around the world and the answer can be given through this process of sharing and collaboration.

“The content is created by the users; sharing their knowledge and innovative ideas from farmer to farmer across continents and languages, and enabling people with no access to the internet to harness its power, through even the most basic mobile phone, to improve their lives.”
